With FPL's typical residential customer bill nearly 30 percent below the national average, our bills are among the lowest in the nation. While the cost of everyday items has gone up in recent years, our bills are down a total of almost $10 a month compared with rates in 2006.
How do we do it? We're making smart investments on behalf of our customers that continue to deliver improved service at a lower cost.
We take security seriously at NextEra Energy -- both at our facilities and online. We have a comprehensive cybersecurity monitoring program for all of our computer networks and are actively involved in cybersecurity-related matters, including educating our employees about the importance of being cyber-aware and sharing the responsibility of cybersecurity across the company. In 2017, our employees completed more than 10,000 cybersecurity training sessions focused on building techniques for maintaining cyber-awareness at work, at home and while traveling.
We have made it a priority to protect our power networks and customer data from all forms of intrusion, including cyberincidents, that could threaten to disrupt operations or cause harm to customers. That's why we build and maintain strict security safeguards into the power grid.
The safe, secure delivery of electrical service is paramount. Our comprehensive, defense-in-depth approach imposes security at every layer and our standards for cybersecurity exceed those set by the industry.
In order to establish a cybersecurity culture at NextEra Energy, we've led numerous campaigns focused on increasing awareness and responsibility regarding cyber issues. In addition, we regularly host events to engage and educate employees about cybersecurity, for example our Cybersecurity Summit, which featured the participation of about 80 senior business unit leaders in 2017 who gathered to learn about the importance of cybersecurity and strengthen partnerships through this knowledge.
